A Love Letter to Burnout Kink

Dear Unconditional Love,

What would you have me know about my relationship to burnout kink?

KS

Oh Sweet One-

How you love to push limits. If there is an imposed boundary, you will cross over it. You hate to be told what to do.

This is part of your innate nature, dear rebellious one. And no one crosses over your boundaries quite like you do.

Unfortunately, this little romanticized relationship has gotten you in trouble many times. Remember the time your boss at the Four Seasons forced you to take a week off as she was concerned you would end up in the hospital? You couldn’t see for yourself that you had reached your limits and that you were seriously about to hurt yourself.

The key here is your speed. Your brain functions faster than the average person, and it thrives on being stimulated and taking action. It can elicit the same feelings as sex for you when you are looking at it as a goal to get off on.

Your work has always been — and will always be— to continue getting comfortable with peace in the moment. It sounds so dull.

But what if that was a lie? What if it was actually where your creativity comes alive?

You have numerous data points to support this more profound truth. Look at all you have “gotten done” this month of June by not seeing clients.

You focused on you-your goals, your vision, and your next steps. You got inspired and dug into your custom-built frameworks that you had created for others. You sat by the ocean and allowed her to speak to you through her wisdom. You got quiet, you danced, and you were present for your relationships.

Have you ever felt wealthier?

We applaud you, and yet there is still an internal yearning to do more. To scratch an itch or test a boundary, even though your heart is yearning to be still.

This little insidious voice inside that whispers, “You are falling behind”.

Well, who isn’t?

How could you possibly feel ahead in a culture that values distraction and technological advancement without consideration of peace?

You will always feel behind, and maybe that is where your freedom lies. Because guess what, you are advanced in areas that are important to YOU.

YOU KNOW YOURSELF.

That is your superpower. You know when the burnout is approaching. You know when you need connection as opposed to distraction. You know what fills you up and what drains your life force.

Allow that part of you to be nurtured and cared for, and accept that productivity may be mediocre. Remember what they say in the rooms, “Mediocre makes money”.

You are here to discover who you truly are and shine brightly into the world, so your people can find you and create beautiful things collaboratively that bring the world to life.

The burnout kink will always be a part of you because you care and you are capable. You don’t have to prove that to anyone. Go forth and love your life. That is your forever work.

Love, love
